Fred was one of 12 children and was raised in Lima, OH. He was proud of serving his country for over 22 years and wore a hat daily that showed that he served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was also proud of the fact that all of his boys served in the military as well.

When he married Gerda in Germany, he also became a father immediately raising four of her children as his own. Gerda had 5 children but one had been adopted by an American family that Fred knew in Germany. This couple also were the witnesses as Fred and Gerda's wedding. Paul and Mary Puckett raised Robert Puckett in the states. Bobby and his wife, Debbie, live in Hayesville, NC.

Fred and Gerda are buried right beside his mother, Alice, and next to her are her parents, Henry K and Sarah Mowery Nungester, next to them is their son, John Franklin Nungester.

Fred E. Johns, 81, died Sept. 8, 2007, at his residence.

He was born July 14, 1926, in Lima to Oscar L. and Alice Mary Nungester Johns, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 17, 1959, he married Gerda Erna Hugo, who died May 11, 2005.

Mr. John was a career military man. He served his country in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, serving two years in the Navy and 21 years in the Army. He had been a parts room manager for Continental Can Co. and a security guard for Acrux at Honda. He was a member of the Golden Age Senior Citizens, Russells Point, and First Assembly of God, Lima.

Survivors include two sons, Klaus D. Johns, of Fladugen, Germany, and George E. Johns, of Oregon state; two daughters, Alice M. Burden, of Wapakoneta, and Barbara E. (Jack) Patten, of Taswell, Ind.; and 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Carl H., Roy, Ellsworth O., Donald I. "Jack," Lawrence Edward and Gerald E. Johns; and five sisters, Hazel I. Kinstle, Maxine Ribley, Eileen Ryan, Ida M. Sherard and Gloria May Johns.

Services will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445. Pastor J. Randy Davis will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in St. Matthew Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the VA Medical Center, Dayton.
