SARAH BALLANCE, PIONEER
WOMAN, 83, PASSES ON

Long Creek, Ore., Jan. 20.-Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Monday, January 17, for Mrs. Sarah Ballance, pioneer Long Creek woman who died Saturday evening at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hardisty, where she had made her home for a number of years.

The sermon was by Reverend Monroe of Boise, Idaho, assisted by Mr. Walters, field secretary of the Idaho Conference of Seventh Day Adventists.

Sarah Jane Carter was born October 8, 1854 near Little Rock, Arkansas. In early childhood she moved with her parents to Missouri, where at the age of 14 she joined the Baptist church. In 1880 she came to Long Creek and in 1881 was married to Charles Ballance. To this union four children were born. Two sons, Robert and Frank, died in infancy.

She had been a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church for thirty-five years, and was indeed a true Christian.

On November 14, 1932 she fell, fracturing her hip and was confined to her bed for several months. She was never again to walk and all her activities were confined to a wheel chair. The story would be incomplete if we did not mention here the devotion and loving care bestowed upon her by her daughter throughout her declining years.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hardisty, and a son, step-children, A. C. Ballace of Ritter. Mrs. H. A. Murphy, Pomona, Calif., and Mrs. A. W. Walker of Hillsboro, Ore., two brothers, John Carter, Pendleton, and R. W. Carter, of Alhambra, Calif., and a number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
