Roy is the son of Joseph "Joe" Alexander Byrum and Lillie Lou Mefford.
He married Stella Paris August 26, 1923. They had 3 sons.

Roy C. Byrum, age 70, resident of Sanders Road in Athens, died early Thursday morning in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He was an employee of the City of Athens for 33 years. At the time of his retirement, he was a foreman with the sanitation department. A native of Hawkins County, Mr. Byrum had lived in McMinn County since early childhood. He was the son of the late Joe Byrum and Lillie Mefford Byrum and a member of McMahan Calvery Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Sue Byrum; three sons, Clarence Byrum of Cincinnati, Ohio; Charles E. Byrum of Cleveland, TN and James T. Byrum of Athens; one step-son, Charles Haney of Lynndale, Arizona; 14 grandchildren, three brothers, Luther Byrum of Waverly, TN; George Byrum of Dickson, TN and Bob Byrum of Athens; three sisters, Mrs. Julia Long and Mrs. Dollie Long, both of Athens and Mrs. Annie Rigney of Manchester, TN. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the McMahan Calvery Baptist Church with Revs. Keller Brown, Orlen Baker and F. H. Patterson officiating. Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends tonight at Ziegler Funeral Home.
