William was a farmer and also was a breeder of short horned cattle. From the "History of Muskingum County, Ohio" by J. F. Everhart we learn his parents brought him to Salem Township from Monroe Township when he was six years old.

From this book we also learn, "William W. Adams, the subject of this sketch, was born May 11, 1822 and was reared and educated in Salem Township. He was married in March, 1852 (February 22, 1852 per ancestry.com) to Louisa Bainter, a native of Muskingum County, Ohio, born October 4, 1832, and the daughter of Frederick and Mariah (Crumbaker) Bainter, both natives of the Old Dominion." "Mr. and Mrs. Adams became the parents of eight children, five of whom are now living: Allen, George F., Susan M., Helen and Ida. Susan is the wife of Robert Scott, Helen is now Mrs. George W. Williams, and Ida is the wife of Mr. Albert Scott. The sons are prosperous farmers of Muskingum county. The children deceased were Maria C., Homer, and Cora. Mr. and Mrs. Adams were consistent members of the Lutheran church and were well respected in the community. His first wife died September 7, 1867, and in March, 1869, Mr. Adams married Mrs. Sarah A. Carver, a native of Muskingum county, born May 9, 1827, and the daughter of Miller D. and Nancy A. Hannen." "Mr. Adams has held the office of township trustee and school director for a number of years, and is deeply interested in educational and religious matters. He has succeeded in accumulating considerable property, and is the owner of three good farms as are in the township, 600 acres in all. He also owns a fine residence in Adamsville. He takes an interest in political matters, and votes with the democratic party. Mr. Adams' children all reside in the county, and he has eleven grandchildren."
