Mrs. Laura Ewoldt, 99, a member of the original colony of Hall County settlers, died Monday in a local hospital. She had been seriously ill since Saturday. The family farm home is on Route 2, Grand Island. Funeral rites will be at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon in the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Pastor Harvey Clark will conduct the service. Interment will be in Grand Island Cemetery.
She was born March 10, 1870, on the homestead of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Matthiesen, south of Grand Island. It was on March 9, 1889, that she and Bernard Ewoldt were married in Grand Island. Mr. and Mrs. Ewoldt went to the present farm to make their home. They resided there all their wedded life. Five children were born to their union. Mr. Ewoldt, stockman and thresher, died June 30, 1937. Mrs. Ewoldt continued to maintain her home for her sons, Albert and Emil, who remained at home. She was active until the last years. Mrs. Ewoldt was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a member of the congregation at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her son, Emil Ewoldt; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Ewoldt of Wood River; grandsons, Arthur, Delmer and Gaylon Ewoldt, all of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Arthur, Eddie and Albert Ewoldt; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Richard; three brothers, Julius, Fred and Ernst Matthiesen; and one sister, Mrs. Anne Schoel.
