Moses Jefferson Baker, guerilla captain, was captured in fight near Sherwood by Union Army 9th Kansas Cavalry and was taken to Fort Scott Kansas. Fort Scott was full of his enemies and he died there September 16, 1863. Information found in History of Jasper county, Missouri and family records. Moses Jefferson Baker was the son of Nathan Baker (1783-1839) and Mary Polly New (1782-?). His parents married 1804 in Gallatin county, Kentucky and then moved to Scott county, Indiana and to Washington county, Missouri.
Moses J. Baker married first in Barry county, Missouri on July 22, 1838 to Amanda Melugin. Moses J. & Amanda had three children:Burton C. (1840-1874); Thomas Jefferson Baker (1842-1907); and Winfield Scott Baker (1847-1880). Moses J. Baker married second in Jasper county, Missouri on January 9, 1850 to Nancy Jackson/ West. Moses J. & Nancy had three children: Leah E, born 1855; Laura S. born 1859; and Moses C. born 1862.
