Garnett was the son of Beverly Robert Barker and Anna Eliza Eaton. The family came west from Virginia in 1898 and settled in Canadian County.

He married Myrtle Stiers on Nov 9, 1904 and they had two children: Allean and Rachel.

Garnett was killed in a gun fight in a corn field near his home on Dec 24, 1920.
