According to the Journal of his brother, Rev. Jonathan Scott, Moses (Originally named John Jr.), the first child of John and Lydia Scott, was born about 1730, probably in Braintree, Mass. When still an infant and while his father was away at sea, he was "kidnapped" by Samuel Spear of Braintree and grew up under the name of Moses Spear, which he had changed in 1752 to Moses Scott.
