"A History of McDonough County", (Goodspeed) says, "Lewis Mourning came from Kentucky in July of 1833 settling near the town of Colchester, where the family remained about a year then removed to a small place about one mile East of the place and stayed here about a year making some improvements. He then moved on to Section 26 and five years later on to the place where his son William Harvey lived and had his brick yard. Some time previously, Lewis had operated the Bacon Grist Mill which stood about 2 miles North-East of Colchester."
This mill has long since disappeared but was probably situated on Crooked Creek later dignified by the name Lamoine River. The same book shows Lewis Mourning to have been a veteran of the "Mormon War" when the militia laid siege to Nauvoo and several people got hurt. This was a strong factor in the decision of the Mormons to leave Illinois.

Minerva is their only child that a Find A Grave memorial has not been found.
