Very possibly, he was the father of Thomas J. Ballard who m. Catherine Provin. Thomas J. Ballard named one of his sons John V. Ballard, presumably after his father. The 'V' in the name purportedly stands for Valentine.
He has a Revolutionary War marker on his grave, and 'Co 3, 3rd CT Regiment' on his gravestone. However, research has turned up an entirely different John Ballard in that same regiment. Possibly there were two of them, but that seems unlikely. Probably, someone found the name on a roster of troops and assumed that he was the same person and had the stone placed some time after his death.
