John Frederick (Jerry) Dickson

John Frederick (Jerry) Dickson, 69, of Richmond, MO, died Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center, Excelsior Springs, MO. John was born October 19, 1939 in Richmond, MO to John Maynard and Mary Lucille (Burns) Dickson. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1957. While in high school, he worked at Bill's Market delivering groceries, and then served in the United States Air Force. John married August 12, 1962, his wife survives of the home.

Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law; one daughter and son-in-law; five grandchildren; one uncle, and many first cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and was an only child.

John worked for the Missouri Highway Department for 36 years, retiring in 1998 as a Senior Construction Inspector. He had recently worked as an engineering consultant for the City of Richmond on the Wellington Street Project. John worked with Richmond Little League baseball as a coach and organizer. John served as Scout Master of Troop #324 and later as District Chairman. He was the Advancement Chairman for the Big Muddy District at the time of his death. He was awarded "Outstanding Scoutmaster" and the District Award of Merit as well as the Silver Beaver Award. John was Sachem in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say where his tribal name was Stalking White Wolf. John was a Missouri High School football and basketball referee. He belonged to the Richmond Masonic Lodge, Ararat Shrine and Scottish Rite. He has been a member of the Richmond United Methodist Church for 46 years. John entertained his children and grandchildren with stories of riding his horse, Ole Patsy, to the one room school near Knoxville.

He will be long remembered as having the scariest house on the block for Halloween. During retirement, John loved traveling and was always planning his next trip. He was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments. The light of his life was his five grandchildren. Grandad was a familiar sight at his grandchildren's many sports and school activities. He always encouraged them to be the best they could be.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond United Methodist Church, Richmond, MO. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the Richmond United Methodist Church, Richmond, MO, Rev. Don Smith to officiate. Visitation will be Monday, November 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Mic- O-Say Ceremony at 6:30p.m. prior to visitation, at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, MO. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens, Richmond, MO. Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, MO is in charge of the arrangements.
