Anna Sumner was born September 23, 1874, to James Harlan and Mary Ellen (Hash) Garrett, who lived on a ranch on Willow Creek, near Grizzly, in what was then Wasco, then Crook, and still later, Jefferson County.

James Harlan Garrett had come to the Grizzly area in 1870, and Mary Ellen Hash's parents, John and Elizabeth, had settled on Coon Creek, near the divide between McKay Creek and Marks Creek. Hash Rock, a prominent landmark of that area, is named for that family.

Anna and her younger brothers, James and Donald, and sister, Ethel, grew up on their parents' ranch, attending schools near there. One brother, Roy, was born March 17, 1881, and died April 17, 1881.

Anna, who loved horses and ranching, tried to break every horse in the country. Her days at the ranch were lnterruped by a year of schooling at a Catholic school, in The Dalles, and one year of schooling in Prineville.

In October of 1897, at the age of 24, she married Thomas Y. Sumner, a cattle rancher. In addition to his ranch, Sumner also operated freight wagons between Shaniko and Lakeview. He later became the station agent at Shaniko, and Tom and Anna also operated the old Shaniko Hotel.

The couple raised five children, four daughters and one son: Madge, Ellen, Calvin, Florence and Gladys. Thomas Sumner passed away in 1937. After Tom passed away, Anna lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Madge and Tom Wyman, in Prineville, visiting her other children from time to time. Ellen married William Roeper; Calvin married Geraldine Skinner; Florence married Clay Taylor; and Gladys married Wilford Donnelly.

Anna Sumner was one of the chosen few--- she celebrated her 100th birthday with more than 350 friends and relatives at an open house reception held on Sunday, September 22, 1974, at the Prineville Community Church, where she had been a member for many years. Anna passed away in May 1975.
