A. R. (Bob) Sartain
Funeral services for A. R. (Bob) Sartain will be conducted Tuesday, Jan 31, at 2 p.m., at the Prineville Funeral Home by a Christian Science Reader.

Sartain, a well-known Crook County Cattleman and land developer, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. He ws 87.

Born Oct. 10, 1890, in San Rafael, Ca., Sartain came to Oregon when he was 16, working for the Miller and Lux Cattle Company in eastern Oregon. From there, he traveled to Gerlach Livestock Company in Gerlach, Nev., where he worked for three years.

During those years, he broke three strings of horses, each horse being seven or eight-years-old. At the age of 19, he compiled a 16-animal freight team and for five years freighted between Gerlach and the Leadville Mines in Nevada - aproximately 60 miles apart.

Sartain operated a 3,000 head cattle operation in California, before moving to Crook County in 1951. At that time he purchased the Mills Land & Livestock co., in Paulina. He improved and operated that ranch until he moved to Prineville and retired in 1959.

Sartain was a collector of old guns and various kinds of horse equipment. He was a veteran of World War I, having served with the 91st Division of the Infantry, also known as the Wild West Division.

A member of the Crook County Historical Society and the Prineville Elks, Sartain was also a member and trustee of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Sartain suffered a stroke last June, at the same time his wife, Daisy, died. He had been a patient at Pioneer Memorial Hospital since that time.

Survivors include his daughter, Geraldine Sartain Baumhart, of San Francisco, Ca.

The family would appreciate memorials to the Crook County Historical Society, the Christian Science Society, or the charity of one's choice.

Burial will be in Juniper Haven Cemetery.
