Dean Abolt, 77, of Milan, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, Milan. The family will greet friends following the service. Private inurnment is Monday at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Milan, or to the National Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Dean was born on September 13, 1931 in La Harpe, Ill., a son of Orville and Lela Hubbard Abolt. He married Donna L. Blaser on December 29, 1957 in Millersburg, Ill.

He graduated from Western Illinois University with a B.S. degree and also a Master's degree. He began his teaching career at Seaton and later at Aledo, where he also coached football, basketball and track; some of Dean's proudest moments where his years coaching in Aledo. He joined the Rock Island/Milan School District in 1966 and served as principal at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Milan, until his retirement in 1982. Dean then joined his wife Donna, at the County Companies Insurance Agency in Milan and retired from insurance sales in 1995.

He was a US Army veteran, having served from 1953 to 1955. Dean was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Milan, where he had served as an Elder. He was a member of the Milan American Legion Post 569, the Blackhawk Chapter of Retired Teachers, Rock Island/Milan Booster Club and a former member of the Milan Rotary Club. Dean enjoyed following area sports and playing tennis and golf. He also took great enjoyment in following the careers of former students.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Joanne Abolt, Grand Rapids, Mich. and Craig and Jill Abolt, Franklin Lakes, NJ; grandchildren, Josh and Alex Abolt, Franklin Lakes and Nicolas and Katie Abolt, Grand Rapids; and a brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Alice Abolt, Champaign, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
