Mary Murphy married iron worker Charles Cavanaugh in Glasgow, Scotland in 1840. They raised their children there until immigrating to New York City in the late 1860s. Charles died suddenly in 1868. Mary later moved to the city of Brooklyn with adult children and resided there until her death in 1891 from Bright's Disease.
