Charles Brown, Second Oldest Citizen, is dead
Veteran of Civil War Passes Away Last Night, Was 97 Year of Age
Charles Brown, Aged 97, one of Chippewa's oldest citizens in point of age, and Civil War Veteran, died at his home, 324 Cobban St., at Five minutes to 10 o'clock last night. Death was due to the general infirmities of his advanced age and wearing out of life's machinery.
Born at Ban Bridge, Ireland, in 1829, of Scotch-Irish parentage, and a kin of Ireland's famous poet, Robert Burns, Mr Brown sailed for the United States in 1850. It was on Christmas day that he landed in New York City after a stormy voyage on one of the old sailing vessels. Fifty miles out of port the vessel was wrecked and Mr. Brown escaped drowning but lost all his belongings. Undaunted by the experience, he followed the vocation of sailor on coast wise vessels for 18 years.
In 1864 Charles Brown enlisted in Co. C, 18th Wis regiment in Vernon County and served throughout the war. In 1890 he came to Chippewa Falls to reside. He was a member of James Comerford Post, No 68, G.A.R.
His wife preceded him in death five years ago and the surviving members of the family are two daughters and one son: Mrs Belle Abrams, Mrs Irene Abrams, and R G Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon from the residence on Cobban St at 2 and at the M E Church at 2:30 o'clock. On account of the few remaining members of the G.A.R. post being feeble, it is probably the full military rites will not be accorded.
