Ransom Herrin was born in Illinois about 1831, oldest of five children born to Mager and Nancy Herrin. On May 11, 1850 Ransom married Mary Ann Anderson Jordan. Their marriage certificate states that Ransom's father had to give his consent for Ransom to marry. Ransom and Mary Ann had five children, Elmanza Elizabeth (Edna) (1853, Jefferson, Ill), James Monroe (1856 Ill.), Luella (1860, Ill), Franklin (1863,Ill), Oscar (1868,Ill). Francis Lubbock's call and was stationed at Camp Magruder in Goliad County. Major General John Bankhead Magruder's Texas State troops fought in the Battle of Galveston in January,1863, recapturing the city from Union forces. The Federals never tried to retake Galveston.
Within months of Texas' readmission to the Union under Gov. Edmund Davis, the 12th Legislature created the Frontier Forces, The State Guard, the Reserve Militia and the State Police, all of which were commanded by a newly restored Adjutant General,on Nov. 25, 1871 the 12th Legislature, second session, added a fifth organization, The Minute Men.
Ransom served in Company F. Minute Men of Gillespie County, Fredericksburg, TX., from April 1872 - April April 1874. Muster Rolls from Texas Archives show that he and his son, James Monroe, served at the same time in 1874, but under different commanding officers.
