GARRETT, JOE, Joseph Marcus Garrett, 88, Sanford, FL, died Saturday, April 5, 2008. He was born in Greenville, GA and moved to Sanford in 1947 from Gadsden, AL. In 1947 he and his wife, Laura, opened Garretts Department Store in Sanford which was a downtown landmark until it closed in 1993. During that time he was active in the Sanford Merchants Association and the Sanford Chamber of Commerce. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII and a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Sanford. Joe Garrett was predeceased by his brother, E.C. Garrett; sister, Catherine Jenkins; and his grandson, Joshua Marcus Garrett. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Laura Schmehl Garrett; son, Otto Garrett, Sanford; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jo and Jerry Schwalm, Deltona; granddaughter and her mother, Sara and Myriam Garrett, Sanford; sister-in-law, Kiddie Garrett, Greenville, GA; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside Funeral Services will be 11AM Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Evergreen Cemetery, Sanford. Following services there will be a reception at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Mary, 128 W. Wilbur Ave., Lake Mary. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial donations to the charity of your choice. Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, Orange City is in charge of arrangements.
