Hardware Pioneer's Widow
Selma Holmquist, 99, succumbs

Mrs. Selma Holmquist, widow of Rudolph C. Holmquist, who founded a hardware store in Redwood City in 1895, which is still in business today, died last night at Devonshire Oaks Convalescent Hospital, where she had been for 13 years. she would have been 100 years old on Dec. 29.

Mrs. Holmquist, who was born in Stockholm, Sweden, had lived in Redwood City since she was 14 years old. She leaves 66 descendants.

Her husband, who died May 27, 1952, had owned and operated the Holmquist Hardware Co., for 45 years before retiring in 1940 and turning the business over to a son, H. E. (Rowdy) Holmquist, a former city councilman and recipient of Redwood City's Outstanding Citizen Award.

The senior Holmquist, also a native of Sweden, established the firm in 1895. For two years the store was located on the west side of Main Street. In 1897 the store was moved across the street at Main and Stambaugh Streets.

Mrs Holmquist was the mother of Mrs. Laurine Crockett of Redwood City; Rudolph C. Holmquist Jr., of Woodside; Harry J. Holmquist of Burlingame; H. E. (Rowdy) Holmquist of Redwood City; Walter Holmquist of Modesto; Mrs. Nancy Rytand of Atherton, and the late Mrs. Margaret Mullen.

In addition to her sons and daughters, Mrs. Holmquist is survived by 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Crippen & Flynn Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City. Private inurnment will be at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto.

Memorial contributions are preferred to the First Congregational Church of Redwood City or the Devonshire Oaks Employes[sic] Fund.
