Lula was a homemaker. She raised ten children and cared for many of her grandchildren. My grandma described her as an talented gardener. She canned her own vegetables and preserved meats. One thing that my grandmother remembers most about her was her fear of storms. She claimed that she did not wish to be buried in the Williams-Russell cemetery because she would get “blown away.” She was laid to rest on an even worse hill. Every time it stormed, she gathered her children and grandchildren and took them to the cellar where they remained until the storm passed.

One time my grandmother was visiting and got caught picking and eating strawberries out of Lula Mae’s patch. As a punishment, she was told to churn butter. Lula gave her a cup to taste the buttermilk with, but she dropped it into the churn. She then caught my grandma fishing for her cup elbow deep in the butter churn. She went to visit Lula before she died in the hospital and this was the last memory that they reminisced over.
