George is the son of David Calvin & Martha Patricia "Pattie" (Henderson) Kite. He married Hazel Wilma Fulford on January 16, 1922 in Washington, District of Columbia.

During the First World War he served in Company B, 102nd Machine Gun Battalion (26th Division) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on October 24, 1918 near Verdun, France. See War Department General Orders No. 21 dated February 1, 1919.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private George J. Kite (ASN: 1288359), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 102d Machine-Gun Battalion, 26th Division, A.E.F., near Verdun, France, 24 October 1918. After several runners had been killed in the attempt, Private Kite volunteered and delivered an important message under a hail of fire.
