Joseph Wesley Arbisi, 60, died Sunday, October 26, 2008, in Sedalia. He was born on July 17, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Joseph and Oneita (Flint) Arbisi.
Joe and Becky Hageman were married on November 18, 1972, in Sedalia by Reverend Phil Newell.
Joe was raised in Kansas City and attended college at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. He moved to Sedalia in 1971 and began his teaching career. Joe taught school in Sedalia, Tipton and Kansas City for over 35 years. In addition to teaching, he coached wrestling, diving and swimming. Joe was the swimming coach for the Sedalia Bandits for 24 years. His philosophy was "There is no such thing as I can't, only I can, I will and I have." His interest and love of swimming brought award winning swim teams to Sedalia and a continuation of that love to many children and adults.
Joe was a wonderful Christian man, and he served in various capacities in the church over the years, including Sunday school teacher and board member. He didn't just talk the Christian life, he walked it each and every day.
Joe was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, not only to his children and grandchildren, but also to his godchildren, whom he loved as if they were his own. He was a family man, and he delighted in spending time with each and every one. He always had a tender heart towards his students and athletes, and his eyes would sparkle with joy when he helped them learn something they thought they could never do. He was a generous man who was always ready and willing to give help to anyone in need. To Joe there were no strangers, only people waiting to become his friend.
Survivors include his wife Becky, of the home; 2 sons, Erik Joseph Arbisi and wife, Carisa, of Sedalia and Tony Arbisi, of Sedalia; one daughter, Kim Bauer and husband, Michael, of Sedalia; five grandchildren, Chance Arbisi, Brent Arbisi, James Arbisi, Gretchen Arbisi and Leah Bauer; six godchildren, Eleesha Meyer, Thomas Meyer, Joseph Meyer, Maggie Meyer, Susan Meyer and Lucas Meyer; two brothers, John Flint, of Florida and Ray Flint, of Minnesota; two sisters, Victoria Flint, of Missouri and Narvella Adams, of Missouri.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Emma Jo Bauer, whose middle name was given to her in honor of her Grandpa Joe.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 31, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Sedalia. Reverend Eddie Brown officiated. Pallbearers were Stan Hageman, Mike Chancellor, Bob Chancellor, Joel Sherman, Jerry Tankersley and Scott Venable. The Arbisi family received friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, at the church. Burial followed at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia.
