Rev. John H. Ballard was an ordained Free Will Baptist minister, being ordained after 1865. He was converted in Oct. 1862, but served in the Union Army for NC, until it ended. Afterward, the Association wanted him to be ordained and he was reluctant because he had limited education. However, his wife who he'd married when he got home, helped him along with another teacher, until he submitted and was ordained. He preached for over fifty years, and had a fruitful ministry. He raised a large family, both by his first wife, and after her death, he married again and raised several children.
He was a friend of the Temperance movement and all benevolent causes. The French Broad Association, of which he was affiliated, wrote a tribute they published to honor him and his long life of usefulness in the gospel ministry.
