22 July 1935: One youth was killed and another was critically injured in an automobile accident early this morning, on the Lebanon-Pine Grove Road, between Woods Creek Park and Lickdale. Mark Deitzler, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Deitzler, of Bethel Church, between Lickdale and Fredericksburg, was killed almost instantly. Death was due to a fractured skull. Lloyd Deitzler, 21, a cousin of the dead youth, of Fredericksburg R. D. 1, is in critical condition at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He received a fractured skull. G. O. Bender, state highway patrolman, of the local sub-station, who is investigating the accident, stated at noon today, the car apparently left the road on a curve and overturned several times. Patrolman Bender learned that Joseph Kelley, of Lykens, a trucker, who was driving his truck toward Lebanon, came upon the wreckage after 1:00 o'clock this morning. Kelley told investigating officials that he saw the limp body of one man lying on the highway and another in a ditch along side the concrete highway. With a companion, Kelley loaded the two men on his truck and rushed them to the office of Dr. Paul D. Reich, in Jonestown. Dr. Reich pronounced Mark Deitzler dead upon examination of the body, and immediately called the Good Samaritan Hospital ambulance to convey Lloyd Deitzler to the local institution, where examination revealed his skull is fractured. Dr. H. S. Gingrich, county coroner, was summoned on the case and issued a certificate in the case of Mark Deitzler, as "accidental death." Patrolman Bender stated that the Deitzler boys were returning to their homes after spending the evening with girl friends when the accident happened. Dr. Gingrich stated that parents of the victims are of the opinion they were forced off the highway by another automobile. Patrolman Bender stated this afternoon that there was no eye witnesses to the accident and therefore is at a loss to determine exactly what happened. Bender stated that Lloyd Deitzler was driving the car at the time of the accident. Patrolman Bender and Coroner Gingrich are continuing their investigation with the hope that they will be able to solve the mysterious incidents surrounding the fatal accident. State Highway patrolmen stated this afternoon that this is the first fatal accident they investigated in Lebanon County since March of this year. Besides the parents, three sisters survive.
