Elizabeth was born in rural Ohio, the 11th of 12 children born to a German Baptist Brethren farm family. Soon after her birth, her father moved the family to the Carroll County/Clinton County area of Indiana. Her father owned 1,900 acres of land in that area of Indiana, timberland that was turned into farmland over the decades. Elizabeth married Noah GOCHENOUR on Christmas Day, in 1851, in Carroll County, Indiana. She was 18 years old; the preacher was the Rev. John Metzger. Eleven children were born to the union: Elizabeth (m. LATSHAW), Mary (m. LATSHAW), John E., Hannah (m. LATSHAW), Margaret, David D., Daniel, Noah, Sarah Catharine, Susannah (m. ROBERTS), and Stephen Andrews. When Elizabeth was 21, married, the mother of one child and pregnant with her second child, her father gave her 160 acres of his land.
