Obituary
Unidentified Newsclipping - 1897
PETTEE.--Harriet L. Pettee, daughter of Seneca and Lucy Owen Pettee, was born in Richmond, Mass., June 1, 1823. The devotion of her parents, together with the animated religious conversations that took place between parents and preachers who made that a stopping place while on the Circuit, early called her attention to her need of the Saviour. Under the preaching of Rev. Thomas Bainbridge she with her sister, now the wife of Rev. Thomas Lodge, an honored member of the New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was converted and at once joined the church. For over fifty-five years she lived a life of faith. Deeply interested in every good work, she gave of her limited means most generously; not only a tenth, but a quarter and more of her yearly income went to the Church and its enterprises. There was a serenity about her life that charmed all who met her, and that to her pastor was in part, at least, a mystery until it was learned that for many years the first hour of the waking day she spent in prayer, study of the Bible, and reading in "Daily Food." Nothing was allowed to interfere with this hour, for then, she said, her mind was in the best condition to wait upon God. After an illness of but three days she passed away. It many be truly said, "She hath done what she could." She passed to her heavenly reward on December 21, 1896. Three sisters--Mrs. Thomas Lodge; Mrs. Wood, widow of the Rev. Mr. Wood of Troy Conference; and Mrs. T. B. Strong, at whose home she died--mourn their loss. The funeral was held in the church at Canaan, Conn., conducted by the pastor, and the burial took place in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Mass.
