Nancy Jane was the oldest of eight children born to Elisha and Elizabeth (Roberts) Camren. She married Lewis Jackson Smith on 20 February 1871 in Hancock County, Illinois. They had nine children: Albert Alva, Edgar Lee, William Franklin, James Harvey, Jesse Camren, Martha Elizabeth, Nellie May, Louis Sherman and Margaret Ellen. William Franklin died as a child but the others all grew to adulthood. Sons James and Louis Sherman also predeceased Nancy.
