OBITUARY - WHITBECK

Last Rites for Aged Fredonia Woman Were Held Here Monday.

Frona Carley, daughter of Richard B. and Jemina (sic) Carley, was born December 19, 1852, in Jennings county (sic), Ind. She died at her home in Fredonia, Kans., November 24, 1940, at the advanced age of 87 years, 11 months and five days.

When a small child, her parents moved to Johnson county (sic), Mo., in the year 1857. Three years later they moved to Louis county (sic), Mo., and in the fall of 1870 they came to Wilson county (sic), Kans., locating near Buffalo.

She was united in marriage to Moses Whitbeck on December 12, 1882, in Altoona, Kans. After their marriage, they lived in Fredonia where her husband was in business until 1900. They moved to Guthrie, Okla., and resided for three years after which they lived in Shawnee, Okla., where her husband died in 1906. Mrs. Whitbeck continued her home in Shawnee until about twenty years ago when she came back to Fredonia to make her home with her daughter, Minnie Whitbeck.

Four children were born to her, a daughter having died in infancy, and she became the mother of her husband's three children by a former marriage.

Mrs. Whitbeck had been a religious woman all her life, and was especially interested in all the good things of life. Her Bible was "a lamp unto her pathway and a light unto her feet". Her hearing became impaired, but that did not keep her from attending the worship services of her church. She came many times and could hear nothing but the music. But she could see her friends and show her loyalty. In the last few days of her life, she and her daughter, Minnie, would comfort their hearts by reciting the beautiful Twenty-third Psalm before going to sleep at night.

She transferred her membership from the Methodist church of Shawnee, Okla., to the Methodist church of Fredonia in the year 1923. She was a beloved member of the Dorotha class of the local church.

In her death, she is survived by two daughters, Minnie Whitbeck of the home, and Mrs. C.E. Frasier of Okmulgee, Okla.; four sons, Harry L. Whitbeck of Seminole, Okla., Neal Whitbeck of Long Beach Calif., Ray W. Whitbeck of Atlantic City, N.J., and Frank Whitbeck of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, November 25, at the First Methodist church (sic). Rev. C.E. Sisney, assisted by Rev. Ed. A. Reinhardt of the Christian church, was in charge of the service, and interment was in the Fredonia cemetery (sic).
