Private May 1, 1862. Roll dated February 29, 1864, last on file, shows him present.

Pension records show he was wounded in face, jaw bone broken and five teeth destroyed, at Nashville, Tenn.
December 16, 1864.

Sent to Macon, Ga. hospital. Unfit for further service. Surrendered at Augusta, Ga. in 1865. (Resident of Ga. since birth,1843.)

NOTE: Death Certificate erroneously states place of birth for the parents of John Whitfield. He is the son of William Gray Whitfield and Annie Murray Whitfield, both born in North Carolina.
