At the age of seven, he moved with his parents to Freeport, Illinois. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Amarosa, Iowa. At the age of nineteen, he moved to Prairieburg, Iowa. On November 16, 1855, he married Margaret Ann Weeks.
In 1871, he received the first license to preach in the North Iowa Conference of the United Brethern Church. In 1875, he was ordained at Lisbon, Iowa by Bishop J.J. Glossbinner.
For thirty-three years he devoted his life to the ministry.
William Hartly Wagner and Margaret Ann Weeks had eight children: Barbara Ellen (Barden), Elmer H., Albert George, Amos A., William E., Charles L., Susan Marie (Ver Valin) and Ely known as Ben.
