Jayree Ricke

Jayree (Meridith) Ricke, homemaker, 25-½ year Cessna retiree, and 6 ½ year cancer survivor, died July 19, 2008 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at Via Christi St. Francis, in Wichita. She was born May 25, 1940 to Jasper and Lois (Olmstead) Meridith in Hutchinson, Kan. Jayree was the middle child of five. The family lived in Hutchinson, Wellington, Milan, and rural Argonia and, when Jayree was in grade school, the family moved into the town of Argonia.
Jayree attended school in Argonia and graduated with the class of 1958. She most recently enjoyed their 50-year class reunion.
On Jan. 23, 1960, she married LeRoy Ricke. They began their over 48 years of marriage in a very small apartment at Suppesville while managing the "Feed Bag" café.
Jayree and LeRoy also lived in Norwich and Wichita, and in 1974, moved to Cheney, Kan.
Jayree loved the Lord and served Him in many personal ways as well as through her active participation in the United Methodist Church of Cheney where she was a member. She loved and deeply appreciated her church family and particularly their support and encouragement throughout her years with cancer. She enjoyed being a member of UMW, her Sunday School Class and was a true encourager to the church youth.
Jayree loved water and for many years, she and LeRoy, LaDonna and Jay L. would spend weekends and vacation times at various lakes camping and staying at resorts with family and friends. When this no longer satisfied her, in 1988 she and LeRoy bought a cabin on Table Rock Lake in Missouri. Only last summer she was still water skiing. Some may have thought the cabin was small, but there was always room for more family to stay.
The wonderful times at the cabin were a treasure in Jayree's heart and in the hearts of her family.
Jayree was a testimony of faith throughout her years with cancer. Soon after her diagnosis, she said, "If I die, I want it to be for God's glory. If I live, I want it to be for God's glory. Live or die, glory be to God." When anyone asked her how she was doing she always said, "great."
Jayree was preceded in death by her father, Jasper Meridith and her mother and step-father, Earl Isgrigg. She is survived by her husband, LeRoy of the home, daughter LaDonna (Bruce) Dawson, Cheney; son Jay L. (Tina) Ricke, Winfield; grandchildren Mariah, Nicole, Tasha, April (Kevin), Jessica, Krystyn (Dustin), Terry, Jayln and Katlyn; great-grandsons, Raiden, Owen and Jayden; brothers, Bob (Sandy) Meridith, and Bill (Judy) Meridith, Wellington; sisters, Janet (Andy) Leddy, Conway Springs, Judy (Jack) Casner, Milton; sister-in-law Judy Ann Meridith, Wichita; many other relatives and a host of friends.
Service of remembrance was 10:30 July 23 at Cheney United Methodist Church with Reverend Patrick Buss officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Cheney.
Memorials have been established with Ricke Scholarship Fund, United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 237, Cheney, KS 67025 and Hospitality Centre, Victory in the Valley, 3755 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67218-1002.
