John was the son of Valentine Mihm and Rachel Holben. He married Margaret McGuire and Melissa Dague.

John moved west to Ohio in 1841 with his parents. He was a private in the OVE, 46th, Co. E. during the Civil War. He served from 26 June 1882 to 3 July 1865 and saw action during the Battle of Shiloh. He was discharged at Louisville, KY, on a surgeon's certificate of disability (for rheumatism and a hernia). In the 1890 Veterans Census, the widow listed was Margaret. John found work as a laborer, clearing forest for his neighbors and relatives Isaac Putman, Peter Putman and Amos Beldon, all of Van Wert Co., OH.

There were 60 pages of dicuments compiled when John filed for a pension for injuries in the military. He was described as being 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 190 pounds and having a light complexion. His first discharged from the Army was on 31 December 1863 at Scotsboro, Alabama. On the 180 Census, Liberty Twp., Van Wert Co., OH, he is listed as a farmer. On January 17, 1872, the Probate Court of Van Wert County, he was declared insame and committed to a mental asylym in Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH, on December 25, 1872. He remained in the hospital for ten years. After his release, he learned that his wife had been unfaithful and had a child by another. they divorced shortly after. His son Amos applied for a pension on his father's Civil War service.
From an article in "The Daily Herald," (Delphos, OH0, published October 21, 1899. Under the heading "News Relics" (of 1872), is an article originally published 25 January, 1872: "John Mihm, a thrify farmer of Van Wert County, became insane and developed a mania for borrowing money and buying everything that struck his fancy. He was sent to the asylum." John died of heart disease at the home of his sister in Rockford, OH. His wife Melissa filed from Ohio for his pension in the 1920s, but was not qualified because of the divorce."
