Anchorage resident Bart B. Bixel, 59, died of cancer Feb. 21, 1998, at home. A graveside service was at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of life for family and friends followed at the home of his stepdaughter.
Mr. Bixel was born Aug. 16, 1938, in Fresno, Calif., and graduated from high school. He moved to Alaska in 1985. He lived in Wasilla and worked for Nye Frontier Ford from 1986 until moving to Anchorage in 1987. Mr. Bixel worked for Alaska Sales and Service until 1990, when he moved to Eagle River, and worked for Nye Toyota until 1993. In 1995, he moved back to Anchorage. Mr. Bixel was a member of Grace Community Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping and sailing. His wife said: ''He was a loving husband and father. Bart set an example for generations to come. His desire to live was unsurpassed. His ability to overcome health obstacles was widely known. He will live on as an example of how positive thinking can effect deadly diseases. Bart and his sons shared a love of motorcycle racing and radio controlled airplanes. Bart was very proud of the fathers his sons have turned out to be.'' According to his stepdaughter, Bart enjoyed being a grandpa to her two sons, Cody and Lucas. ''He was there for their births and allowed me to be there for his passing,'' she said.
Mr. Bixel is survived by his wife, Barbara Grace; sons, Bart III and wife Denise of Marysville, Wash., and Rod Bixel and wife Lori of Anchorage; their mother, Edith Bixel of Grants Pass, Ore.; stepdaughter, Catherine Bartel and husband Doyle of Anchorage; grandchildren, Cody Joseph, Lucas Zachary, Lindsey Marie and Bart Bixel IV; sisters, Pat Ball and Frances Bixel, both of Grants Pass; nieces and nephews, Tracey Hendricks, Ryan Darnielle, Chris Hendricks, Melanie, Hal and Anthony Bibeau, all of Troutdale, Ore.; uncle, Eric, and cousin, Frances Lane, both of Gold Beach, Ore. He was preceded in death by his father, Bart Bixel; mother, Mildred Bixel; and nephew, Dana. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105. Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
