Dr. Robert Frank Kelly, 89, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at his home. He was born in North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on May 21, 1919. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Zentner; brother, Harold (Hap) Kelly; son, Paul Robert Kelly; granddaughter, Jennifer Grace Atkins. He was a pillar of St. Mary's Catholic Church since 1955. He was a veteran of World War II having served in Okinawa in the U.S. Army Air Corp and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Captain in 1979. He retired from VPI & SU after 35 years of service as a Professor in Animal Science/Food Science. He established the Meats Program at Virginia Tech, and was the coach of the National Award winning Meat Judging Team. He won the Wine Award for distinguished teaching in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Olive Ann Kelly, of Blacksburg; three daughters and sons-In-Law, Dr. Kathy Kelly and Wayne Radford, of Christiansburg, Patti and Anthony Yates, of Harrisburg, N.C., Jean and John Mullins, of Blacksburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Daniel "Danny" Kelly and Shelley McElhanon, of Charlotte, N.C., Mike and Jan Kelly, of Matthews, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, Rob Atkins, Heidi Sanders, Anthony Atkins, Olivia Hansford, Rory Kelly, Kimberle Mullins, Ryan Kelly, Andrea Mullins, Sean Kelly, Clara Jean Kelly, Casey Kelly, and Zak Kelly; five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Paul Gage Sanders, Cody McAleer, and Sam and Isabelle Atkins; special cousins, Donna Rae Beernink and Mary Ann Schabel; and many other relatives and friends. A funeral mass will be conducted Saturday, November 8, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Ken Shuping officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1205 Old Mill Road, Blacksburg Va. 24060 or to R.F. Kelly Endowment, c/o Virginia Tech Foundation, 902 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg Va. 24061-0336. The family will receive friends Friday evening November 7, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg.
