NOTE: The year of birth on his gravestone pictured here is believed to be in error by about 5 years. The original gravestone was apparently damaged and subsequently replaced by a descendant of Franklin, who presumably estimated the year of birth as 1801. However, U.S. Census records from 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, and the Kansas State Census of 1885, report his year of birth between 1804 and 1810. 1806 is believed to be a reasonable estimate based on his probable age at marriage. Franklin worked as a wagon driver of a mule-team, hauling wheat to Chicago, which was a distance of about one hundred and fourteen miles, and sold it for thirty-five cents per bushel, and brought back salt, for which he received ten dollars a barrel.
Franklin also worked as a farmer in Champaign County in the 1850's and 60's. Then sometime before 1870, Franklin and Violet moved to Glenwood Township, in Schuyler County, Missouri, where he was as a "Grocer".
Franklin and Violet moved again, prior to 1880, to Bloomington, Mc Lean County, Illinois, where the 1880 US Census reported he was retired.
In 1885, Franklin and Violet lived in Sycamore, Montgomery County, Kansas, two doors away from their daughter Annie Eliza Dobson-Marsters and her husband Luther Marsters.
A year or two later, they moved to Neodesha in Wilson County, Kansas, nearby their daughter Clarissa Jane Dobson-Whitesell and her husband John Whitesell.
Franklin died there in 1888, and was burried at the Varner Cemetery in Neodesha, Kansas. Violet later moved to Eugene Oregon, where her son John Maurier Dobson was living. She lived there until her death in 1897.
