On September 20, 1993 Clarence Hatcher of Floyd, (VA) will celebrate something very special, his 100th Birthday.

The World War I veteran lives in rural Floyd County with his wife Laura , daughter Maidelle and caretaker Mary Adams in the same house he built in 1924. Clarence and Laura (Alderman) Hatcher were married November 24, 1923 by Rev. R. G. See in Floyd, and look forward to their 70th wedding
anniversary later this fall.

Clarence Hatcher attended the Rush Fork School in Floyd County and worked continuously as a self employed farmer and withthe Radford Army Ammunition Plant and F. A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company until his retirement at the age of 65. He served in the U. S. Army at Fort Lee, Virginia, near Petersburg,
and received an honorable discharge in 1919. Hatcher and Guy Underwood are two of the remaining veterans of World War I, who reside in Floyd County. Bob Nester of Floyd VFW Post 7854 has announced that he has submitted Hatcher's credentials for the World War 75th Anniversary Commemorative Medal. This medal will be awarded by a member of the local post and is sponsored by the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs. If possible the award will be presented at the upcoming birthday celebration. on September 19, 1993.

The medal is intended forevery living U. S. Veteran of World War I, estimated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at between 30,000 and 40,000.

HATCHER, David Clarence Sr., 102, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, September 19, 1996 at the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. Mr. Hatcher was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Laura Alderman Hatcher, Floyd; three sons, David Clarence Hatcher Jr., Patrick Springs, Berchard L. Hatcher, Manassas, Donnie Hatcher, Floyd; two daughters, Faye Burgess, Floyd, Maidelle Hatcher, Floyd; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Topeco Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Maberry Funeral Home.
