EDWARD DUNNING

Edward A. Dunning

Edward A. Dunning, age 95, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on All Souls Day, November 2, 2008 at Christiana Hospital.

Mr. Dunning was born in 1913 to Elisha and Hester (Berger) Dunning in Perry, OK, where he spent much of his childhood on the family farm. In 1937, he graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and began a 33-year career with the Ralston Purina Company. In 1940, he was transferred to Wilmington where he resided for the rest of his life. Mr. Dunning was one of the first professionally trained engineers to be recruited by Purina to bring modernization to the animal feed industry. During WWII, Ed was responsible for building and supervising a new Purina plant in Edgemoor that would service Delaware and Maryland's rapidly expanding poultry business. In spite of severe material shortages during the war, his resourcefulness and determination played a key role in finishing the plant and supplying the war effort. Though no longer in use, his plant's distinctive feed elevator remains a landmark to drivers on I-495 in Edgemoor. Upon retirement from Ralston Purina in 1970, Mr. Dunning managed the northern Delaware offices of H &R Block tax services until 1982. In 1941 he married Mary Agnes Desmond of Wilmington and through her influence, Mr. Dunning became a Catholic in 1947. He went on to be very active in St. Helena's parish and the Diocese of Wilmington. In 1978, he established the Wilmington Division of the Blue Army; a convocation dedicated to Mary, the blessed Mother of Jesus Christ. He later arranged to have the International Pilgrim Statue of Mary put on display in Rodney Square in 1985, and again in 1995. At age 74, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Catholic Church and was assigned to his home parish, where he further served as the Diocesan Director of the Marion Order. As a Deacon, he had the privilege of marrying several of his children and grandchildren, as well as baptizing a number of their children. Mr. Dunning was an avid golfer and fan of baseball, basketball and football. He actively coached many of his sons' baseball teams.

Mary Dunning passed away in 1963. In 1965, Ed married Marie Agnes Young, who predeceased him in 2003. He is survived by 9 children from Mary Desmond, 8 sons: Michael, Stephen, Richard, Joseph, John, James, Robert, Edward and a daughter, Mary Jane Castellano. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. His granddaughter, Laura Samuel, predeceased him in 2003. A sister, Grace, from California, and 2 brothers, Delmer and Lee, from Oklahoma and California also predeceased Mr. Dunning.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Christiana Hospital, the Delaware Hospice and Lorelton Assisted Living for the compassion and care that was given to our father.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 10 am on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at St. Helena's Church. Interment will be at Cathedral Cemetery. Viewing will be on Wednesday, November 5 from 5-8 pm in the church.
