Born in Wilson, Texas Mar. 24, 1928
Before joining the United States Navy, James worked as an arc welder for Brown Shipyards, Houston, Texas.
Joined the United States Navy in 1944, San Diego, Ca. assigned to USS LCI-807(G),(M).
Okinawa Gunto operation (as LCI(G)-807 and LCI(M)-807)
Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, March to June 1945
March 1945 - participated in the assault of Kerama Retto and support of UDTs at Okinawa
April 1945 - participated in the assault of Okinawa Shima
While supporting troops coming ashore on Brown Beach a "hang fire" occurred on a port side 4.2 mortar, that exploded killing 4 outright and wounding 14. James was blown overboard and drowned... he was then revived and transferred to USNB RELIEF no.3245.
after recovering from injuries, was transferred back LCI-807(M) and a short time later was transferred to LCI-996(L), seeing further action. James was awarded the Purple Heart.

Studied Drafting at Rice University, Houston, Texas...
later being employed by Brown & Root, Halliburton and Dow Chemical.
