He graduated from Harvard College in 1798, then studied with Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse of Cambridge and Dr. E.A. Holyoke of Salem. In 1801 he went to London where he attended medical lectures and studied in medical schools and hospitals there. When he returned to America in 1802 he brought back information from Dr. Jenner to Dr. Waterhouse about vaccination and a now famous snuff-box containing Small Pox vaccine. He moved to Amherst, NH, in 1806.
