Robert, the son of Kathaleen Wiley Williams and Robert Dolphus Williams Sr. deceased, of Fayetteville TN, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 13, 1963 in Nashville TN. He arrived in Vietnam, assigned to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 23 during Operation Double Eagle II the Marines were conducting platoon sized search and destroy operations along the Khang River in Que Son District, Quang Tin Province and were constantly harassed by enemy sniper fire. Cpl Williams was wounded by an enemy gunshot, evacuated to the US Navy Hospital ship, the AH-16 USS Repose where he died of the wounds he had sustained.
