"Oregon Resident Dies at Stayton at Age of 80"

John W. Thomas, who died Wednesday, November 18, at his home near Stayton, Or., would have been 81 years old December 30. He was born December 30, 1838, in Richmond, Roanoke county, Va. On May 15, 1858, he married Mary E. Woods. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Thomas moved to Gentry county, Missouri, where they lived for six years. From that point they started westward over the plain in 1865. They settled near Salem, Or., later moving to Sublimity, Or., and thence to Stayton, Or., after which they took up their residence on their farm. To this couple were born seven children, four sons and three daughters, five of whom are living, William E. Thomas of Salem, Or.; Wade M. Thomas of Tacoma, Wash.; Mrs. John H. Carter of Devitt, Or.; Mrs. J. B. Carter of The Dalles, Or., and Mrs. T. J. Ware of Stayton, Or. Mrs. Mary E. Thomas died December 28, 1888. On June 7 Mrs. Thomas married Mrs. Francis M. Downing. Surviving him are his widow, five children, one brother in Virginia, four stepsons, 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral.

John W. & Mary E. Thomas were the parents of at least 8 children, 5 of whom are buried at Lone Oak. They are: Mary Hattie Carter and Susan J. Carter, in Sec. 2 Lot 3; Ella Ware, Sec. 2 Lot 70; Archabald Barnett & Samuel, both in this lot. John W. & his brother, Charles W. Thomas [see Sec. 3 Lot 76] had a furniture factory in Stayton for a
time, among other business enterprises.
