J.B Cavender of Hemphill, Texas and a long-time resident of Houston, Texas passed away on October 28, 2008. He was 97 years of age.

Mr. Cavender was born on November 30, 1910 to James Byrd and Maude Cavender in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

His family has deep roots in Texas history; his maternal great grandmother lived in the DeWitt Colony in the Republic of Texas and his forbearers included soldiers, ranchers, perhaps a defender of the Alamo and even a few 19th Century Texas Rangers.

His father, who had business interests in Orange, New Mexico, died suddenly in the 1919 influenza epidemic, leaving his bereft widow to raise several children. However, because his father was a Mason, J.B. and two of his sisters were able to enroll in the Masonic Home of Fort Worth, which provided a home and education for J.B. and his sisters. While attending Masonic Home, Mr. Cavender excelled in athletics, representing Masonic Home in the 1928 Texas Relays and playing quarterback on the first of Coach Rusty Russell's legendary Masonic Home football team, known as the "mighty Mites". Mr. Cavender attended Masonic State Teachers College in San Marcos, graduating in 1933, when he moved to Houston. He worked for many years with the Wallace Company in Houston, retiring in 1974. While working in Houston, he met and married Constance Mikleton in 1939, and they were happily married for 47 years. Constance Cavender died in 1986.

J.B. Cavender is survived by his children: Tony, married to Paulette Wolfson, who live in Houston, Kathy Richards, married to Jim Richards of Burnett, Texas, Julie, married to Robert Burson of Austin, Texas and John and his wife Adriana, who also live in Houston, as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

J.B. Cavender lived a long, rich and rewarding life, he was a gentleman whose kindness and consideration to everyone is an inspiration to all of those who knew and loved him. We rejoice in his life, yet his passing is also a source of great sorrow.

The family wishes to thank Connie Ellender of Hemphill, Texas, for the care and consideration she rendered towards our father, and the physicians and staff of the Lufkin, Texas Memorial Specialty Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held at the Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, Texas, with a visitation scheduled for Friday, October 31, 2008 from 4 until 9pm, with the funeral to be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008, starting at 11am.
