JAMES F. BARBEE PASSES AWAY SATURDAY
Had Lived Here a Number of Years
Was County School Superintendent at One Time
Word was received in this city last Saturday morning of the death of another of Mendocino county's pioneers.
James F. Barbee was born in Willits, Mendocino county in 1868. He was educated in the public schools of Willits and Ukiah and received a teachers' certificate in 1890 at the age of 22.

He taught school for awhile at Covelo and became school principal of the school there, afterwards teaching at Fort Bragg. He became principal of the Fort Bragg school later and was then elected County School Superintendent in 1899, serving as such until January 1907; when he went to Berkeley with his family to reside; engaging in the real estate business.
About a month ago he was taken ill with stomach trouble and was removed to the Sanitarium at St. Helena in Napa county. An operation was performed on him from which he never recovered, dying twelve days later.

His body was taken to Berkeley for burial New Years day.

The following resolutions were adopted by a unanimous vote of the Board of Education of Mendocino County, January 1, 1912.

Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to remove from us our former School Superintendent and associated, J. F. Barbee, and, Whereas, J. F. Barbee was one of the kind and gracious souls which it was pleased Heaven to place among us. Whereas, In his passing the State has lost a valued citizen, and education an earnest supporter, and, Whereas, Those who knew him best will remember him for his kindly good nature, and his many acts of courtesy, and,
Whereas, We, the members of the Board of Education of Mendocino County, feel most keenly the loss of our friend and former co-worker, and, Whereas, We wish publicly to show our appreciation of his efforts to elevate the standard of our public school system,
Therefore be it resolved, That we extend to his family and relatives sympathy and good will in their hour of sorrow, and, Be it further resolved, That a page in our minutes book be set apart and these resolutions be inscribed thereon, and, Be it further resolved, That the resolutions be published in the Ukiah papers and a copy of the same be sent to the bereaved family.

UNTIMELY DEATH OF J F BARBEE
James Felix Barbee, prominent among the Bay Cities' realty operators, and for eight years superintendent of schools of Mendocino county, died at the St. Helena sanitarium last Sunday morning after a brief illness. The untimely death of Mr. Barbee is regretted by a host of relatives and friends here and in Berkeley.
Mr. Barbee was 44 years of age, 42 years of which were spent in California. He was born in Missouri, the family moving to this place when he was two years of age. By dint of hard work he educated himself to be a teacher, and after a notable career in the Ukiah public schools and the schools of this county, was elevated to the county position. Five years ago he moved to Berkeley to become a manager in the Mason-McDuffie Company offices. For the past year he was in business for himself on Center street, Berkeley.

His wife, Mrs. Artie M. Barbee, two sons, W. L. and Richard, and a daughter, Norma Barbee, survive. The funeral services were held from the First Christian church of Berkeley at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday, Rev. Loken presiding. The interment took place in the Sunset View cemetery.

In honor of the one who had so faithfully served the people of Mendocino county as Superintendent of the schools, the flag on the court house was drawn to half mast when the word of Mr. Barbee's death was received at Ukiah.
