Margaretha Elsie Neu was a daughter of Valentin and Katharina Margaretha (Boehler) Neu. Margaretha and her siblings were collectively born in Schwalbach, Saarlouis District, Saarland, Germany. She arrived in New York City aboard the vessel "Rajah" out of Le Havre, France with her parents on November 25, 1847. She married Wilhelm Stamm in the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church of East Birmingham [now a part of the City of Pittsburgh], Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1855.

Her burial record notes that she was the mother of 13 children.
