Parents: Adin and Mary (Ball) Thayer.

Prepared Amherst Acad. Studied law with David D. Field, N. Y. City; admitted to bar, 1843; practiced N. Y. City, 1843-66; manufacturer of agricultural implements, and in business, Hoosick Falls, N. Y.; later resumed law practice, N. Y. City. Public Administrator of City of N. Y., 1850-53. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1864.

Married May 29, 1851, MEDORA CHARLOTTE CHEATHAM, daughter of Leonard Pope Cheatham & Elizabeth Davis Robertson, of Nashville, TN. She was an older sister of Confederate General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham.

Interesting note: James Smith Thayer married Medora Charlotte Cheatham. Their daughter Ada Thayer married Charles M. Addison and it was THEIR daughter Julia Morris Addison who married George Emlen Roosevelt, who was the second cousin of Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of FDR), and first cousin once removed of President Theodore Roosevelt.
