TWO WOMEN KILLED - Two Members of Prominent Families of Union Township Meet Death in Accident.
Two Van Wert county women were killed and three other residents of the county, were injured, one seriously, in a traction line crossing accident. Sunday morning, about 9:00 o'clock, three miles North of Auburn, Indiana, Mrs. Jesse Poling, who resides about four miles Northwest of Van Wert, on the G. W. Bowers farm, in Union township, was killed outright and Mrs. George Roth, a resident of Union township, died at a hospital in Auburn, Indiana, a short time following the tragedy. The injured are Jesse Poling, who was removed to the hospital, of Auburn, Gene, seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Poling and George Roth. Members of the party were en route to Lake Lavine, near Coldwater, Michigan, to spend the day with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Herl and family, of Convoy, when the fatal accident occurred. The automobile, driven by Mr. Roth, was traveling North on the highway, the tracks of the Interurban line, laid parallel with the roadway. Occupants of the automobile saw a traction car, some distance away, traveling in the opposite direction, but were unaware of an abrupt turn in the roadway, that crosses the tracks. Mr. Roth, upon coming to the curve, evidently applied the brakes of the car, in attempting to avert a crash, causing it to swerve to the right, the electric car, striking the rear section of the passenger car.
Mrs. Poling was killed outright, and Mrs. Roth died a short time later at the hospital, both suffering chest injuries and extensive internal injuries. The deceased women and Gene Poling were riding in the rear seat of the machine, at the time of the collision. Mr. Poling sustained numerous cuts and his head, several severe cuts on his left leg and the ligaments torn in his right arm. Mr. Roth received laceration on his head, requiring several stitches to close and Gene Poling escaped with minor cuts and bruises. The bodies of Mrs. Poling and Mrs. Roth were removed to Convoy, to be prepared for burial.
Mrs. George Roth, aged twenty-eight years, was a native of Van Wert county and enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Her direct survivors are her husband, her mother, Mrs. Jessie Kesler, of Ohio City, a brother, Cloyd S. King, of Fort Wayne; five half-sisters, Mrs. Olive Nesbit, Mrs. Violet Richter and Mrs. Gertrude Leiter, of Detroit, Mrs. Helene Reidenbach, of Convoy, and Mrs. Imo Chapman, of Cleveland, and a half-brother, Russell Kesler, of Ohio City. She was a niece of B. E. Smith, of South Chestnut street, Mrs. Stella Agler, of Ohio City, and Mrs. Sadie Everett, of Bay City, Michigan. The funeral service will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock, at Union Center Church, in Union township. The remains will be laid at rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetery, near Convoy.
Mrs. Jesse Poling was formerly Miss Eva Chilcote, daughter of B. O. Chilcote, ex-treasurer of Van Wert county and wife, of Ohio City. She was aged twenty-nine years and has resided her entire lifetime in this county. Mrs. Poling was popular in a large circle of friends. Her immediate survivors are her husband, a son, Gene, her parents, five sisters, Mrs. Pauline Johns, of Van Wert, Mrs. Iva DeMint, of Ridge township, Mrs. Madelyn Weimer, of Flint, Michigan, and Misses Clara and Eloise Chilcote, of Ohio City, and two brothers, Benjamin and Warren Chilcote, of Ohio City. Funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock at Methodist Episcopal Church in Convoy. Interment at the I. O. O. F. cemetery, near Convoy.
