The son of Henry Nicholas & Eva (Miller) Zimmerman, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Todd Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served with Co. G, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, July 4 - August 11, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis. He then enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 22, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). Captured during fighting at Ashby's Gap, Virginia, on July 19, 1864, he was incarcerated at Danville, Virginia, and paroled on the James River February 22, 1865, then forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, on February 25. Granted a thirty-day furlough to start March 4, 1865, he returned to duty. On June 17 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation, he transferred to Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865.

After the war, he married Catherine Adams and fathered Stella (b. 04/28/70 - married Edward Casteter), George F. (b. 06/01/72), Jennie Elizabeth (b. 07/19/77), Naomi (b. 01/13/78 - married John Shinskie), John Wesley (b. 02/28/80), Iva B. (b. 09/09/82), and Raymond (b. 01/03/86). On October 22, 1907, he entered the soldiers' home at Hampton, Virginia, but was dropped from the rolls with no reason listed to date July 15, 1912, making it unusual that he is buried in the home's cemetery.
