SPRINGFIELD - Donald Wayne Edwards, 79, of Springfield passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Racine, Wis., the son of Harry and Clara Augustine Edwards. He moved to Illinois at the age of 11. He married Bonnie Lepper on Feb. 26, 1955, in Quincy at St. James Lutheran Church.

Mr. Edwards graduated from the University of Illinois in 1951 with a degree in chemical engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at the 3M company as a chemical engineer for 35 years in St. Paul, Minn., retiring in 1988. He moved to Springfield in 1999. Don was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, David (wife, Andrea) Edwards of River Falls, Wis.; granddaughter, Sarah Edwards; grandson, Sam Edwards; sister, Betty (husband, Robert) Heckenkamp of Springfield; and many sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Diane Edwards.

Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of memorial services at noon, Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, with the Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded by Bisch Crematory. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church 2477 W. Washington St., Springfield, or a charity of the donor's choice.
