The son of Dr. George W. and Mary Melinda Greenwood Upshaw. Thomas served as a Private in Company G, of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on April 22, 1862 in Peoria, Illinois. He was mustered into service on August 27, 1862 at Camp Lyon, Peoria, Illinois. He was mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 at Washington, D.C. After returning from the service, Thomas attended Medical School and became a Physician.
