Earlier that evening, while the waters were calm, they had left Athens on the boat and traveled to Hudson where the young men accompanied three young ladies to a vaudeville show at the Playhouse. Just before they departed Athens, one of Harry's sisters passed him, and he said, "So long Sis".
Harry was a marine engineer employed by the Cotton Lines in New York City and was home to visit his family in Athens. His body was recovered near Catskill Point on May 22, 1917. The watch he was wearing had stopped at 1 a.m. His funeral was held at the Lutheran Church and was largely attended.
Newspapers articles of this tragic accident appeared in both Hudson and Catskill, NY.
In 1897, Harry's brother, Fred Requa, Jr. who was eight years old at the time, also drowned in the Hudson River after falling off a boat.
Harry's grandfather, Jeremiah Dedrick also drowned in the Hudson River between Coxsackie and Athens in October of 1886.
